The 13th floor of a tower in a so called premium apartment complex – Park Xpress – has collapsed leading to the death of nine construction workers in Balewadi area of Pune. The workers were constructing an illegal, unauthorized 13th floor when the mishap happened. As a result, the Pune Municipal Corporation issued a stop-work notice to the company, Shriniwas Pride Purple Properties LLP and cancelled their construction permissions.
This is the worst possible scenario for the construction of properties – one that leads to loss of life of workers, delays and financial loss for property buyers.
While we applaud the Pune Municipal Corporation in swiftly revoking building permits and planning a structural audit of the property, it is a small step for the large losses. We request Pune Municipal Corporation and Maharashtra government to ensure that real victims (construction workers and home owners) are treated fairly and the real criminals (builders) are penalized to the fullest extent of the law.
Earlier this year, we applauded the passage of the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), we believe now is the time to apply the law to the fullest extent possible. A stringent application of the bill can bring the much needed accountability, trust and transparency to the real estate sector. We are hopeful the families of construction workers who lost their lives and the home owners who are bearing financial burdens will be treated fairly.
